As electric vehicles have gone mainstream, buyers are faced with a wide range of options, and Tesla – once untouchable – is no longer the dominant force. Last year was a tough year for Elon Musk’s car brand: sales efforts faltered and the company lost its title as the world’s largest electric vehicle maker to China’s BYD.
Today, it seems that all automakers – including luxury brands – are racing to release their own electric vehicles. But at the same time, some companies are limiting their production plans. So what direction is the market heading? Will the US build infrastructure for charging electric vehicles quickly enough? Will gas-powered vehicles soon become obsolete? Will an American company ever dominate the electric vehicle market again? What policies might influence what happens next?
