The Gemini AI sidebar and email summaries in Gmail are now available

Gmail is getting more AI features that could make it easier to control your email.

On the web, Google is starting to roll out a novel Gemini sidebar that can do things like summarize email threads and draft novel emails. The tool will offer “proactive prompts”, but you can also ask “any questions”, Google writes in a blog postand is “built to take advantage of Google’s most powerful models,” such as the Gemini 1.5 Pro. In Gmail mobile apps, Google also allows you to summarize threads via Gemini.

These improvements may be useful, but will only be available to paid Gemini users: you must be a Google Workspace customer with the Gemini Business or Enterprise add-on, the Gemini Education or Education Premium add-on, or a Google One AI Premium subscriber. I would also caution against fully relying on these tools at work; considering that the AI ​​sometimes hallucinates, make sure you double-check the essential email that Gemini helps you with before you send it.
