You can shop for Instacart groceries without leaving ChatGPT

Share

OpenAI and Instacart launch grocery shopping feature in ChatGPT, allowing customers to brainstorm meal ideas, create a shopping list and pay for purchases, all without leaving the chat interface.

This builds on the existing partnership between OpenAI and Instacart; more than two years ago, Instacart launched an in-app AI search tool powered by ChatGPT that helps shoppers ask questions about what to make for dinner or how to accommodate dietary restrictions.

The relationship between OpenAI and Instacart only appears to have deepened after former Instacart CEO Fidji Simo – who was already a member of OpenAI’s board of directors – joined the company as its app CEO in May.

Agent commerce – the utilize of AI tools to research and make purchases on a user’s behalf – is a current priority for OpenAI. The last developer day focused on the ChatGPT application development plan. In early developer preview, ChatGPT launched integrations with apps like Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow; OpenAI has since announced a further partnership with Target, Intuitionand others.

Ahead of this year’s holiday shopping season, both OpenAI and Perplexity have announced in-app features that facilitate users make product purchasing decisions – so you can ask ChatGPT to facilitate you find the best gaming laptop deal that meets your specific criteria. Adobe predicted that AI-powered online shopping will boost by 520% during the holiday season.

Despite the enormous popularity of ChatGPT, OpenAI does not generate profits and maybe not for the next few years – if it happens at all. Its products are so resource-intensive that even subscription costs don’t take into account the amount of computing power the company uses to keep the product running. These agent trading tools could give OpenAI another way to make money because it will require an undisclosed “small fee” when it helps sellers make sales. However, in order to earn these fees, it would take many ChatGPT-based purchases to reduce OpenAI’s debt.
