OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced a “code red” earlier this week, forcing employees to quickly respond to increased competition from Google and Anthropic. Sources familiar with OpenAI’s plans say the company plans its first response to Gemini 3 with the upcoming GPT-5.2 update.
I understand that GPT-5.2 is ready for release and may be available as soon as early next week. Sources tell me that the 5.2 update should fill the gap that Google created with last month’s release of the Gemini 3, a model that topped the charts and wowed Sam Altman and xAI CEO Elon Musk.
Information we reported earlier this week that OpenAI’s next reasoning model is “ahead.” [Google’s] According to Altman, Gemini 3″ was included in OpenAI’s internal evaluations.
I was told that OpenAI originally planned to release GPT-5.2 in late December, but competitive pressure pushed the release forward. At this time, OpenAI has scheduled the release of GPT-5.2 on December 9.
I reached out to OpenAI to comment on GPT-5.2, but the company did not respond in time for publication.
As I said when I revealed that GPT-5 would be released in August, OpenAI’s planned release dates often change in response to development challenges, server performance issues, and even announcements and leaks about competing AI models. This could mean GPT-5.2 arriving a little later than December 9, if plans actually change.
Either way, you can expect significant evolution of ChatGPT in the coming months as OpenAI moves away from flashy novel features and focuses on improving chatbot speed, reliability, and customizability. Altman has declared this code red to improve ChatGPT, and the release of GPT-5.2 is just the beginning.
