Google has filed a motion to dismiss a defamation lawsuit brought by anti-corporate diversity activist Robby Starbuck, who alleged that Google’s artificial intelligence falsely associated him with sexual assault allegations and a white nationalist.
Starbuck is demanding $15 million in damages from Google. However, in its filing, the company says its claims simply constitute “improper use of software tools to induce hallucinations.” According to Google or any actual person who was misled by the alleged claims, Starbuck cannot identify what hints it used to generate the results at issue. Starbuck did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Google, of course, could ultimately take a similar route to Meta to resolve the claims. But at least for now, he decides to fight them in court.
