Paypal said on Tuesday that it is adopting the protocol in conjunction with OpenAI’s “Instant Checkout” feature to allow users to pay for purchases directly within ChatGPT, starting in 2026.
Paypal adopts the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open-source specification developed by OpenAI that enables sellers to host their products on AI applications, thereby enabling users to make purchases using AI agents. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s “Instant Checkout” feature, launched in September, allows users to confirm order, shipping and payment details and complete purchases without leaving ChatGPT.
Customers can apply their Paypal wallets for payments, which the company said would enable it to protect buyers and sellers as well as resolve disputes. The company also provides technology for handling card payments from ChatGPT using a separate payment API.
Next year, merchants using Paypal products will be able to find their products on ChatGPT, starting with categories such as clothing, fashion, beauty, home furnishings and electronics. Merchants won’t need to build any integrations because PayPal will handle seller routing and payments behind the scenes.
The company said it is also launching an agentic commerce suite that will enable sellers to showcase their catalogs on AI applications, accept payments across various AI applications and gain insights into consumer behavior.
PayPal is working to become a payment partner for various AI-powered shopping services, especially as people increasingly apply AI applications to perform everyday tasks. In May, the company teamed up with Perplexity to enable users to make payments within the website AI search tooland in September, Paypal said it was adopting Google’s agent payments protocol to integrate its products with various Google products.
In addition to the commercial partnership, PayPal says the company is providing enterprises with access to ChatGPT for all of its employees and enabling engineers to better leverage OpenAI’s Codex coding tools.
