Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and former chief scientist of OpenAI, is starting a fresh artificial intelligence company focused on security. IN post on WednesdaySutskever exposed Sheltered Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), a startup that has “one goal and one product:” to create a sheltered and productive artificial intelligence system.
The announcement describes SSI as a startup that “approaches security and capability in tandem,” enabling the company to rapidly improve its AI system while putting security first. He also points to the external pressures that AI teams often face at companies like OpenAI, Google and Microsoft, arguing that the company’s “one-stop focus” allows it to avoid being “distracted by management overhead or product cycles.” .
“Our business model means that safety, security and progress are insulated from short-term commercial pressures,” the announcement reads. “This way we can scale up with confidence.” In addition to Sutskever, SSI’s co-founders include Daniel Gross, former head of AI at Apple, and Daniel Levy, who previously worked as a technical staff member at OpenAI.
As OpenAI expands its partnerships with Apple and Microsoft, we probably won’t see SSI doing this any time soon. While interview with BloombergSutskever says SSI’s first product will be secure superintelligence, and until then the company “will do nothing more.”
