OpenAI enters the world of browsers with the launch of ChatGPT Atlas, an artificial intelligence-enabled browser.

Currently available globally, Atlas can be accessed via Apple’s macOS, with support for Windows, iOS and Android coming soon. The announcement comes months after rumors in July that OpenAI would release a web browser that would challenge its dominance GoogleChrome.

In live broadcastCEO Sam Altman said he hopes Atlas will assist usher in a recent way of interacting with and using the web, one in which people talk through a browser rather than typing in a URL.

“We believe AI represents a rare, once-in-a-decade opportunity to rethink what the browser can do and how to use it, and how to be as productive and enjoyable as possible on the web,” Altman said. “Tabs were great, but we haven’t seen much innovation since then, so we were really happy to be able to rethink what it could be.”

Atlas aims to offer users a more seamless way to browse the web and ask questions of agents in chat. Encourages users to search for information using a hint or question, or simply by entering a URL.

Part of Atlas’ value proposition is the ability to operate assist agents to perform tasks directly in the browser. However, agents will only be available to ChatGPT Business, Plus and Pro users for now.

Users can download Atlas from a dedicated application sidebut to start using it, you need to log in to your ChatGPT account.

Talking through your browser about your memories

Atlas is different from browsers like Chrome or AppleSafari with chat function. The home page is basically ChatGPT, with a hint window and a few suggested questions. During the livestream, OpenAI said that the more people operate Atlas, the more personalized the suggestions will be.

The chat window “follows” the user, which means people can chat using ChatGPT on any website. The model will read the content of the browser and answer any questions users may have.

When you first open Atlas, you’ll be prompted to import data from other browsers you operate. When I set it up, it only asked me about Chrome or Safari, the two browsers I primarily operate. Importing browser data creates a memory base for Atlas that ChatGPT will reference. So far, Atlas’ memory is spotty. I linked my history in Chrome and when I asked about my recent travel searches (which I have been searching every day for a month), Atlas said I had never searched for such information.

Browser chat also reduces the copy-and-paste that users often operate when, say, writing an email. Users can open Gmail and then ask ChatGPT in the browser to assist organize their messages. Of course, Gmail or any other Google Workspace product already offers it Opportunities powered by Geminisuch as transcribing emails.

OpenAI General Manager of Applications, Fidji Simo, said in: blog entry so that users can turn browser storage on and off and control what they can see.

Agent mode in the browser

Over the past few months, OpenAI has strengthened its agent infrastructure in anticipation that individuals and enterprises will increasingly rely on agents.

Agents in Atlas can operate the browser if necessary to complete the task. For example, you can browse a recipe and ask in the chat to create a shopping list. The agent can then start shopping on their preferred grocery site. OpenAI has already added the file buy button for ChatGPT and proposed an agent trading protocol that could be helpful to Atlas. However, during the demonstration, OpenAI employees chose not to allow the agent to purchase the products.

Having an agent directly in the browser goes beyond point A, where the browser uses the agent in Chrome. Ideally, it already knows what you’re looking at and has the information it needs to access and execute it in your browser.

The recent browser war

More and more people are using AI models and chat platforms Internet searcheslaunching an AI-enabled browser has become the next battleground between model vendors. Of course, as Chrome grew in popularity, artificial intelligence capabilities were slowly added with Google Gemini models. Google is also experimenting with other AI-powered search features such as generative image retrieval. But companies like it Embarrassmentwith his Comet Browserhopes to face Chrome. Operalong-time competitor Chrome has also repositioned itself as an AI-powered browser by embedding AI features into its platform.

For some, Atlas is a fresh recent way to operate a web browser.

However, many have pointed out that Atlas is not reinventing the wheel because it shares some features with Comet.

What’s intriguing about Atlas is its familiarity. It looks like ChatGPT, but also has tabs like Chrome.

OpenAI emphasized that this is the first version of Atlas, hinting that it may not be its final form. What is certain is that Atlas is OpenAI’s first salvo in the AI browser wars.
