Your public chatgpt queries are indexed by Google and other search engines

Share

It’s a strange look at the human mind: if you Filter search results In Google, Bing and other search engines, which only contain URLs from the domain “https://chatgpt.com/share”, you can find Strangers conversations from chatgpt.

Sometimes these common links to conversation are quite lifeless – people ask for facilitate renovation of their bathroomunderstanding astrophysicsand finding Recipe ideas.

Otherwise, one user asks ChatgPT to rewrite their CV for a specific job application (judging by LinkedIn of this person, which was straightforward to find based on the details of Dziennik Czat, they did not get a job). Someone else asks questions that sound as if they left the INCELA forum. Another person asks the handing, hostile AI assistant if they can Microwave (As a reminder: no), but they still ask AI more and more absurd and trolly questions, ultimately leading to the creation of a guide entitled “How to use microwave without recalling Satan: a guide for beginners.”

Chatgpt does not make these conversations by default.

The conversation would be attached to the URL “/Share” only if the user intentionally clicks the “Share” button on his chat, and then click the second “Create Link” button. The service also declares that “your name and surname, non -standard instructions and all messages added after sharing remain private.” After clicking to create a link, users can switch whether they want this link to be discovered.

However, users may not anticipate that other search engines index their shared chatgpt links, potentially revealing personal data (I’m sorry to whom I discovered LinkedIn).

Although unintentional, this is a norm that has been partly established by Google. When people provide public links to files from Google, such as documents with the setting “Each with a link can display”, Google can index them in search. However, Google basically does not speak links to drive documents that have not been publicly published on the Internet – for example, the document may appear in search if it is related to a trusted website.

According to chatgpt, these chats were identified as part of the experiment.

“Chatgpt chat is not public unless you decide to share them,” said Opeli spokesman told Techcrunch. “We tested ways to facilitate sharing helpful conversations, while maintaining user control, and we have recently completed the experiment so that the conversations appear in search results if you clearly decide to share.”

While search engines such as Google control algorithms that determine what content gets the surface for searched passwords, search engines themselves cannot control what is indexed.

“Neither Google nor other search engines control what websites are made public on the internet,” said Google TechCrunch spokesman. “Publishers of these pages have full control over whether they are indexed by search engines.”
