Apple is bringing ChatGPT to its apps, including Siri

Apple is bringing ChatGPT, an OpenAI AI-powered chatbot, to Siri and other first-party apps and features across all of its operating systems. The tech giant announced the news during its keynote at WWDC 2024 in Cupertino on Monday.

“We are excited to partner with Apple and bring ChatGPT to users in a new way.” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a statement. “Apple shares our commitment to security and innovation, and this partnership aligns with OpenAI’s mission to make advanced AI accessible to everyone.”

Apple says Siri will soon be able to utilize ChatGPT to get “expert opinion” on where it might come in handy. For example, if you need menu ideas for a meal you can prepare for your friends using ingredients from your garden, you can ask Siri and Siri will automatically pass that information to ChatGPT for a response once you consent.

You can attach photos to questions you ask ChatGPT via Siri or ask questions related to documents or PDF files. Apple ChatGPT has also integrated system-wide tools such as writing tools that allow you to create content with ChatGPT – including images – or submit an initial idea and send it to ChatGPT for revisions or changes.

ChatGPT integrations will come to iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia later this year, Apple says, and will be free without the need to create a ChatGPT or OpenAI account. They will initially be powered by GPT-4o, OpenAI’s recently launched flagship generative AI model.

Subscribers to one of OpenAI’s premium ChatGPT plans will be able to access paid features of Siri and other Apple apps with ChatGPT integration. Apple says privacy protections are “built into” the integrations — specifically, requests are not stored by OpenAI and user IP addresses are hidden.
