The last day of my visit to Japan is alone and floats in sizzling sources of the roof of the skyscraper, praying that nobody joins me. Over the past few months I have used the advanced chatgpt voice mode as a teacher of the AI language, part of the test to assess the generative potential both as a tool for learning and a travel companion. Excessive conversation with both strangers and chatbot on my phone was both illuminated and exhausting. I am ready to close my Yapper for a moment and enjoy silence.
When OpenAi launched ChatGPT at the end of 2022, it caused a fire storm of generative AI and public interest. Over two years later, many people are still not sure if it can be useful in their daily lives outside of work.
AND Video from OpenAI in May From 2024, showing two researchers talking there and back, one in English and the other in Spanish, with chatgpt acting as a low delay translator, got stuck in my memory. I wondered how practical the advanced voice mode can be to learn to speak fragments of a novel language and whether it is a valuable application for travelers.
To better understand how AI voice tools can transform the future of language learning, I spent a month practicing the Japanese application for ChatGPT smartphones before traveling to Tokyo for the first time. Apart from watching anime, I didn’t have any knowledge about the language. During the conversation session with an advanced voice mode, which usually lasted about 30 minutes, I often approached it as my synthetic, excessive language teacher, practicing the basic phrase travels to transport transport, restaurants and retail shops.
During the previous journey I used a huge, application for smartphones with quizzes and language learning games to refresh my Spanish. I was curious how Chatgpt compared. I often test novel AI tools to understand their benefits and limitations, and I wanted to see if this approach to language learning can be a function of killers, which makes these tools more attractive to a larger number of people.
Me and my language teacher AI
Jackie Shannon, Keeping the OpenAI product for multimodal artificial intelligence and chatgpt, claims that he uses chatbot to practice Spanish words when he goes to the office. He suggests that beginners like me start by using it for learning phrase-more competent students can immediately try free dialog boxes using the AI tool. “I think they should immerse themselves straight into conversation,” he says. “For example:” Aid me talk about news about X. “or” Aid me practice ordering dinner. “
So I worked on utility travel phrases with chatgpt and playing scripts for roles, such as pretending to order food and talking in the Izakaya restaurant. Nothing really got stuck in the first two weeks and I started to get nervous, but around the third week I started to gain on a few key Japanese phrases for travelers and I felt noticeably less concerned about the upcoming interactions in a different language.
Chatgpt is not necessarily designed to obtain a language. “This is a tool that has many different cases of employ and has not yet been optimized in terms of language or translation learning,” says Shannon. The generalized nature of the default Chatbot settings can initially lead to the frustrating gentleness of interaction, but after a few interactions the ChatgPT memory function quickly caught a Japanese journey and I wanted to practice speaking.
